Celebrating On Holidays

How is it that we have come to celebrate holidays on random days? This started to irk me last Halloween, when our town decided that instead of the 31st, people would trick-or-treat on another date. This week again I find myself maddened by the fact that the 4th of July is actually celebrated on the 3rd, or the 5th depending on where you go. Does this seem strange to anyone else? A holiday with a DATE in the name is being changed?

I am not really sure what changing the date of the actual celebration actually does. I at first thought it was to get kids in bed on a school night, but then that theory was thrown out when here we are in summer break and it is going on. The only other theory I have is that the population of people who do not know when to stop drinking during a holiday celebration must have gone up. We must be doing it so that all of these people actually have a chance at recovery from their hangovers before they are expected back at work! Why else would you change holiday celebrations as a community?

You might ask, "Is it really necessary to celebrate a holiday on the exact day?" Well- the answer is YES! It is! It is a date that we as a whole picked as a day to celebrate something. If we want to change that date, it needs to come to a vote again. I have talked to lots of people about this, and I have YET to have someone say "Oh thank GOD we aren't celebrating the 4th of July on the 4th of July! I had other plans that day! I'm free on the 3rd, so that's good!" No- I have heard people say, "What the hell?"

I think as a nation we are confused about a lot of things, but people let's not be confused about this! We CELBRATE the 4th of July on the freaking 4th of JULY! Halloween has always been on October 31st! And I'll be damned if I celebrate Christmas on any other day than the 25th of December!

PS- My birthday will now be on the 21st of February, instead of the 22nd. It will make it easier for everyone.

I agree - although you KNOW in this family we can (and DO) tend to celebrate a birthday for a whole month!

My birthday actually starts 45 days prior to the actual event and lasts 90 days.

So true!!

This year I went to the fireworks in the town where my parents live. I asked them: "Which day are they doing the fireworks?"

It is as if we don't even *expect* to celebrate the holiday on the actual holiday any longer!
